Executive Director: Corporate Relations

Dr Normah Zondo

Dr Normah Zondo is the Executive Director of Corporate Relations Division, effective from 1 July 2021. She served as Acting Executive Director from February 2017 to April 2019 and from February 2020 until her official appointment in 2021.

Dr Zondo has more than 15 years of experience in Public Relations, Media Relations, Communications, Marketing, Events Management, and Project Management, as well as extensive local and international networks. She previously held senior positions, more recently as Director of University Relations within the Corporate Relations Division, Director of Communications and Marketing at the University of Zululand, and KZN Regional Communications Manager at the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Apart from her impressive academic qualifications obtained at Newcastle University and UKZN, she has extensive training in public relations management, crisis and reputational management, protocol and diplomacy etiquette, culture and function coordination, leadership, writing, media and public relations, and professional communications skills.

She has served as a member of several University committees and chaired the University Naming Committee.  She also serves on various external professional bodies. She was previously the National Deputy Chair of Marketing Advancement and Communication in Higher Education (MACE), which fulfils a leadership role in the Higher Education sector within Southern Africa. She is currently the Chairperson of the Directors’ Forum. Also, she serves on the Management Council of the International Education Association of South Africa (IEISA), a non-profit organisation established to respond to international educational trends and ensure that South Africa remains competitive within the global economic environment. Dr Zondo also serves on the University of Denver’s Internationalisation Council.

Responsibilities of The Executive Director

  • Positioning the University locally and globally as a Premier University of African Scholarship
  • Advancing institutional internationalisation, and providing high-level strategic and PR support to all UKZN key stakeholders
  • She is also responsible for establishing, enhancing, and maintaining effective and mutually beneficial strategic relationships with the University’s key stakeholders and its diverse publics through communication, marketing, and public relations activities that will promote UKZN’s reputation.
